(14 September 1905-9 September 1985). 7th dan Aikikai. First learned from Morihei Ueshiba c. 1921 at the UESHIBA JUKU in AYABE while a live-in student under Onisaburo DEGUCHI. Also studied other martial arts intensively during this period. Later trained under Ueshiba at Kobukan Dojo in Tokyo. Tanaka subsequently became an Omoto priest. In 1957, Ueshiba named Tanaka's Okazaki dojo the "Kodokan." Tanaka practiced small-circle aikido characterized by intensive movements. Wheel-chair bound during his last years, he continued to instruct in his home. |
